How to Take Notes in the AI Era?
I'm Haosen, a programmer. Since childhood, I've been curious about many fields, but I've always had a frustration: much of the information I seem to grasp fades away after a while.
For example, I really like history and philosophy. When just watching videos or reading, I often feel like I understand, but when reviewing later, I find my impression is vague. So I started using writing to organize what I learned. Unexpectedly, as I wrote, my understanding became clearer, my memory more solid, and knowledge gradually became my own.
This is how I developed the habit of writing down my ideas, and I've gained a lot from it.
The Dilemma of Note-Taking Software
Then a new problem arose: which note-taking software should I choose?
I spent nearly three years trying almost all mainstream tools on the market—Notion, Evernote, OneNote, Obsidian, Logseq, Roam Research, Flomo, etc.
Each tool has its advantages and suits different people and scenarios. I've used Notion, Obsidian, Flomo, and Logseq extensively, and I still use Logseq and Obsidian daily. But overall, none could perfectly meet all my needs.
My needs are actually very simple: record and organize my thinking.
What Do I Really Want?
I've always believed that writing is essentially a way of thinking.
Only by writing out ideas—whether a paragraph or an article—can scattered thoughts be clarified and gradually form one's own viewpoints.
Therefore, recording is not the ultimate goal; thinking is the key.
What I want is a tool that can guide and support me to think better, which is also why Miremo ultimately chose "outline-structured notes".
Why Choose Outline Notes?
Although implementing outline notes is quite challenging in development, we still insist on doing it. The reason is that outline notes best match human thinking habits.
People's ideas often start from a central point and expand layer by layer, presenting a tree structure—which is exactly what outlines or mind maps reflect. Starting from the core and extending outward, you can build a clear cognitive map. Tools like Feishu, Logseq, and Roam Research also adopt similar approaches.
Using outline notes is equivalent to organizing and advancing thinking in the way of mind maps.
The true value of notes lies in their ability to help us think more deeply.
Why Focus on Connections Between Concepts?
Miremo's "Supertags" have a "Relationships" tab, similar to knowledge graph functionality.
This feature is not simple to implement, but I think it's very important.
In my view, the essence of knowledge lies in the connections between concepts. No knowledge point is completely isolated; they are interconnected, forming a network.
And the value of knowledge often lies hidden in these connections. Therefore, knowledge graphs should be an ideal way to present the results of our thinking.
Miremo hopes to help you discover those implicit connections through this feature, thereby making thinking more profound and insightful.
AI and Thinking
I see AI as a powerful tool—its core is mathematics and statistical models. Therefore, even if AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) appears in the future, completely replacing human thinking is still unrealistic.
Thinking will always be our own business.
So although Miremo has introduced AI assistance, our goal remains the same: to help users think better, not to replace their thinking.
Any tool (including AI) should ultimately help people complete tasks more efficiently, rather than making people dependent on tools.
This is what I often say: try to write notes yourself as much as possible. Although the human brain doesn't think fast, through writing, knowledge can truly be understood and absorbed.
Thinkers in the AI Era
Perhaps in the near future, AI will make information processing as natural as breathing, and then more people will have the opportunity to become true "thinkers".
If society's overall cognitive level is improved, we may usher in a more rational and creative era. I hope you and I can both become participants in that era.
Let's look forward to the arrival of that era together!
